Donald M. Null, Jr, MD

Dr. Null is presently an Emeritus Professor in Neonatology at the University of Utah Department of Pediatrics. He retired from Neonatology in July, 2021 having spent 51 years practicing medicine. He was in the Air Force for 20 years where he did his Neonatology Fellowship. He was the director of Neonatology and the Neonatal Fellowship from 1982-1993. During that time he developed a transport ECMO program and supported the first transatlantic ECMO transport of a 14 month old child who had aspirated charcoal lighter fluid. He also worked on research of the High Frequency Oscillator and the Bird VDR high frequency ventilator. These devices were then able to be used on critically ill newborns. He was the director of Neonatology and

transport at Allegheny General Hospital 1994-1999. He was the Director of Neonatology and Neonatal Transport Primary Children’s Hospital from 2000-2013. He started an ECMO program there and introduced high frequency ventilation for transport there in 2002. In his 15 years more than 6,000 patients were transported on high frequency ventilation. He finished his career at UC Davis Children’s Hospital as Director of the NICU and Neonatal Transport. In 2022 he was awarded from the AAP a Lifetime Achievement Award in Transport Medicine.

He has published over 100 articles, book chapters and abstracts. He has presented ECMO, HFV, HF transport and BPD nationally and internationally. His present research involves looking at

ways to prevent bronchopulmonary dysplasia. He presently on the board of PAC/LAC and Birthing the Magic Collaborative.
