Our Why

At Birthing the Magic Collaborative (BTM), we focus on filling a critical gap in maternal care for Black women—one that has far too often been overlooked. Black women have long reported being mistreated or dismissed in medical settings, their concerns ignored, and their voices silenced. This persistent mistreatment is rooted in historical disparities and contributes to devastating maternal health outcomes. Black women are more likely to experience pregnancy complications, and tragically, they are three times more likely to die from childbirth-related causes compared to their white counterparts.

This is where BTM steps in. Our mission is to address the educational and communication gap between Black birthing people and the healthcare system. We know that clear, culturally relevant, science-backed information is essential for empowering Black women to advocate for themselves and their families during the perinatal period. By offering workshops, resources, and support systems designed specifically for Black birthing people, we create a space where their voices are heard and their experiences are validated. Our goal is to not only save lives but to help Black women and their families thrive throughout the journey of motherhood.

Through our work, we aim to reimagine maternal care by bridging the communication divide and ensuring that Black birthing people are treated with the respect, dignity, and care they deserve.

Our mission is to bridge the critical gaps in maternal health outcomes that disproportionately affect our community.

We curate and provide comprehensive, culturally safe, and evidence-based perinatal education explicitly tailored for Black birthing people.

Educated & Empowered

Given the research showing the benefit of perinatal education, we feel this is important.

While there is no definitive research on how many Black mamas have access to culturally congruent perinatal or parenting classes, anecdotal evidence shows that the number is relatively low.

Several factors likely contribute to this trend:

Including cost ~ many childbirth, breastfeeding, and newborn care classes range from $50 to $800 (for a series). These expenses can add up quickly, making them prohibitive for many families, even those with robust resources.

Convenience and cultural relevance are also major hurdles. The content and delivery of perinatal and parenting classes should reflect the cultural experiences, values, and needs of Black mamas and their families.

Culturally insensitive or irrelevant content can lead to a lack of trust ~ particularly since there is a history of medical mistrust among Black communities.

Birthing the Magic Collaborative is dedicated to addressing barriers such as cost ~ because our resources are free.

Workshops are also held at various times and on different days to accommodate diverse schedules.

We strive to create welcoming, nonjudgmental spaces by partnering with experts from the diaspora who are equally committed to cultural safety.

Just as important, while we focus on the well-being of our audience, we maintain a rigorous commitment to incorporating the latest scientific research and evidence-based practices

To ensure our support is accessible and impactful, we reach our audience directly by partnering with practitioners and local grassroots organizations.

Last, our goal is to provide transformative, empowering support and innovative solutions.

By providing accessible, culturally relevant education and support, we are fostering a community where Black birthing people can thrive, mitigating the factors that lead to poor maternal and infant health outcomes.
