We recognize that the journey to parenthood is a transformative experience, often accompanied by various challenges, particularly for individuals who confront systemic inequalities.

While we are not formally affiliated with any of these organizations, we strongly believe in recognizing and bolstering their invaluable work. So, we are delighted to provide relevant links and information about their initiatives, as supporting and amplifying their impact is essential.

Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health

The Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) is a national data-driven maternal safety and quality improvement initiative based on proven implementation approaches to improving maternal safety and outcomes in the U.S.  AIM works through state teams and health systems to align national, state, and hospital level quality improvement efforts to improve overall maternal health outcomes. Any U.S. hospital in a participating AIM state or hospital system can join the AIM community. AIM’s strategies include patient safety bundles and tools.

The Ariah Foundation

Despite being a birth advocate and reproductive justice activist with extensive knowledge and preparation for the birth of her grandson, Shawnee Benton Gibson’s family they have experienced the loss of their loved one, Shamony, due to complications associated with giving birth. In response to this tragedy, The A.R.I.A.H. Foundation was created to work towards ending the devastation of Black Maternal Mortality.

Black Coalition for Safe Motherhood

BCFSM™, a 501c3 nonprofit, founded by dedicated birth justice activists, educates the Black community on healthcare advocacy. Drs. Leslie Farrington and Laurie Zephyrin, Black Obstetricians, champion ownership of maternal health experiences. They promote the ACTT Curriculum, a toolkit created by Black women, providing resources to improve outcomes for Black families in pregnancy, birth, and post-birth.

Dr. Shalon’s Maternal Action Project

Dr. Shalon’s Maternal Action Project works to remove barriers, biases, and disparate practices that impede access to equitable, quality care for Black women and women of color.

Their mission is to increase awareness of the Black maternal health crisis and develop and promote evidence-based strategies that improve health outcomes for Black birthing people and families.

Black Mamas Matter Alliance

Black Mamas Matter Alliance is a Black women-led cross-sectoral alliance that centers Black mamas to advocate, drive research, build power, and shift culture for Black maternal health, rights, and justice. BMMA provides technical assistance, training, and capacity building for grassroots organizations, maternity care service providers (e.g., clinicians, midwives, doula networks, and community health workers), academia, and the public health industry. 

Black Moms Connection

Founded in 2015 in Toronto with 12 women, this group blossomed into a global village of nearly 30,000. From an online platform to nonprofit status, they've created a safe space for Black women to connect, share, and unite. With chapters in North America and Asia, they focus on enhancing the social, emotional, financial, and overall well-being of the Black family. Their vision extends to being a voice at key tables, establishing community hubs with childcare facilities, and serving as a media and brand resource to authentically amplify the Black motherhood experience.

Health in Her Hue

Health In Her HUE is a digital platform that connects women of color to culturally competent and sensitive healthcare providers and offers health information and content that centers on their lived experiences.

Melinated Mamas

Melinated Moms is a MOM Profit™ – a community-centered women empowerment social enterprise supporting moms and women to become better versions of themselves through advocacy, education, awareness, and entrepreneurship. We support our community by creating opportunities for moms and women across the Melinated Spectrum to connect, engage, and empower each other with the proper support behind them.

National Black Doulas Association®

This organization helps expectant parents find trained/certified Doulas in their communities to assist throughout pregnancy, labor/delivery, the postpartum period, and beyond.

They also offer a list of questions parents should ask their doulas in the hiring process.

Preeclampsia Foundation

Preeclampsia Foundation has been a leading US-based nonprofit dedicated to improving outcomes for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Focused on conditions like preeclampsia, HELLP syndrome, and eclampsia, they educate, support, and engage the community. With a mission to save lives, they empower a diverse community of patients and experts, offering resources and advocacy to navigate pregnancy challenges and provide unparalleled support for those affected by these conditions – mothers, babies, fathers, and families.

Alliance of Black Doulas for Black Mamas

This group describes their work as improving Black women’s maternal and birth outcomes and increasing their overall birth satisfaction by increasing their access to social, emotional, and educational support from a professionally trained Black Doula.

SISTA MIDWIFE PRODUCTIONS Black Doula Directory

The 'Black Doula Directory' is a national resource offering expectant moms and birthing individuals access to Black doulas nationwide along with doula members from around the world.

All the Unexpected

All The Unexpected is a family resource during the transformative journey of becoming a mother. With podcasts, articles, forums, and resource libraries, they aim to guide and support families, reducing feelings of isolation.
